If you’re new to the idea of escape rooms, prepare for an extraordinary experience that takes immersive games to new heights. It’s a simple premise — you work your way with a team of players out of a locked room by solving puzzles — that translates to effortless fun.

To get maximum magic out of your maze rooms experience, ask yourself these questions as you look for the perfect room.

How to pick the right escape room for you

1. What size is the group?

Most Maze Rooms are able to accommodate at least 2 and up to 7 people. Couples are best served by rooms like the Abyss, which are specially designed for a duo to play. Other rooms are more expansive and great for larger groups. If you want to bring in a larger group, you can also consider splitting the group in half and playing two or three rooms at the same time.

2. What are the players’ interests?

Get a good sense of what kinds of topics and themes your group of players is interested in. For instance, history buffs will love period settings like Pirate Bay, or fantasy-oriented rooms like Lord of the Swords and The Dragon’s Lair. Others might gravitate towards a modern Lunar Mission. And you can always bet on an enjoyable experience with family-friendly favorites like Magic Kingdom and World of Illusions.

3. How old are the players?

Check the age restrictions of the escape room to make sure that the game is suitable for the age range of your group. Most rooms have restrictions based on height or age in place, or require adult supervision for children and teenagers. In addition to taking these steps, you should also make sure that your children are able to handle scary or disturbing material if choosing a room with darker themes like Jack the Ripper or They’re Coming.

4. What level of difficulty is suitable?

Newcomers to escape games are likely best off with a Medium level room for the most rewarding experience. More experienced players can opt for a Hard game to test their Maze Room chops.
